the story of

shirley’s fostering journey: a new chapter after military service

After serving 35 years in the Army, Shirley began thinking about her next chapter while on her final posting in Germany.

As she began considering the next chapter in her life, one goal became clear – she wanted to make a difference in children’s lives.

“Considering resettlement, all my thoughts were to help children in some way. Fostering was highlighted to me which planted the seed.”

Determined to turn that ideas into reality, she started making initial enquiries whilst still living in Germany, demonstrating a strong commitment even before returning home to Wales.

After relocating to South Wales with her family and settling into a new routine, Shirley reached out to Foster Wales Swansea.

It wasn’t long before she knew the time was right to fully commit to fostering, taking that important step to begin her application.

over a decade of fostering

With over 10 years of experience, Shirley reflects on fostering as a transformative and rewarding journey.

“Nothing prepares you for the first person that comes through your door. It takes patience, understanding, love, commitment and remembering that all children are different with different needs.”

She emphasises that every child is unique, each with their own needs and experiences, requiring care that is consistent, compassionate and tailored.

changing a young person’s life

One of Shirley’s most meaningful experiences came from her very first placement -an 11-year-old boy who had faced instability and rejection.

After a difficult experience in a previous placement, he came to live with Shirley. With the right support, care and stability, he began to thrive.

“This, to me is a success and confirms that hard work, love, safety and guidance can transform a young person.”

the rewards of fostering

Providing a safe, stable home is at the heart of Shirley’s motivation.

“The rewards of fostering are giving a child a safe and secure home in which to grow up.”

Her experience demonstrates the lasting impact a supportive environment can have – not just in childhood, but well into adulthood.

honest reflections on the role

Shirley is clear that fostering can be challenging at times. Children in care may bring experiences of trauma, loss and rejection.

However, these challenges are matched by the rewards.

“Sometimes it can be very difficult as children in care come with trauma and rejection but if you can turn it around for a child, you have been a success.”
