suzi and dennis’ story: fostering as a family

When Suzi and Dennis Stock moved to Swansea in June 2023, they weren’t just chasing the sea breeze and a better quality of life – they were finally making space for a long-held dream: fostering.

With six children of their own, four grown and two still at home, their house has always been full of love, laughter, and the joyful chaos of family life. They recently adopted their youngest child, adding another beautiful chapter to their journey of caring for children.

For over 18 years, Suzi and Dennis ran a childcare business from their home in England, offering not just regular care but also emergency and respite support for families in crisis. Fostering had always been in their hearts, but without a spare bedroom, it wasn’t possible. That changed when they moved to Swansea – and they didn’t waste a moment. They reached out to Foster Wales Swansea and began their journey.

In March 2024, they became approved foster carers. Today, while Suzi works as a nursery nurse, Dennis is a full-time foster carer. But fostering isn’t just their job – it’s a family affair.

“we went into fostering to help others and build new positive relationships with the children placed with us. we want every child who lives with us to feel a part of our family, however short or long they are with us.”

Their own children have embraced fostering with open hearts. Growing up surrounded by children, they’ve always known what it means to share, to welcome, and to care. Now, they’re not just adapting – they’re thriving.

“they enjoy playing games together, reading, helping with homework, going on bike rides, holidays, and even dancing to just dance! it’s beautiful to watch.”

Fostering has changed their children in profound ways. It’s taught them empathy, patience, and a deeper understanding of the world.

“it’s helped them learn about the issues other children can face. they’ve become more appreciative of their own upbringing.”

Suzi’s favourite memories are simple but powerful – bike rides at Centre Parcs, laughter in the sea in Majorca, and the warmth of Christmas traditions shared with foster children. These moments aren’t just joyful – they’re transformative.

“watching my daughter reassure our foster child on the big slides, seeing them play together in the sea… those are memories i’ll treasure forever.”

For Suzi and Dennis, fostering has brought their family closer and opened their children’s eyes to the realities others face. It’s made them more loving, more welcoming, and more aware.

“it’s worked well for us. yes, there are challenges, but the positives far outweigh them.”

If you’re a parent wondering how fostering might affect your own children, Suzi has one message:

“don’t be afraid. our children saw it as having more friends to play with and go on adventures with. it’s enriched their lives.”
